October 18th 2022, 16:32 UTC AA6DY is awake. 06:50 UTC K9YO is asleep.

K9YO woke at 01:10 UTC Grid ON50KF just west of Beijing, China. K9YO is flying at an altitude of 12,480 meters, 40,934 feet. Locate and Track has been updated for Ventusky Jetstream, NOAA Hysplit and tracking. The NOAA Hysplit shows K9YO flying to Alaska in 48 hours. K9YO is now in the 7th day and 4th hour of flight.

K9YO last report 06:50 at Grid OM98MW, Yellow Sea China

AA6DY woke at 16:32 UTC at Grid CJ11LQ East of Kitibati Island, Oceania. AA6DY is flying at an altitude of 14,480 meters, 47,494 feet. Locate and Track has been updated for AA6DY with a 48 hour NOAA Trajectory and 84 hour NOAA Trajectory, Ventusky Jetstream and tracking links. AA6DY will be changing direction, traveling east for 48 hours, then start heading north. We will continue to update the NOAA models for any changes.

AA6DY awake at 16:32 UTC, at Grid CJ11LQ, heading east

We’re going to be watching both our balloons very closely as K9YO is preparing for the 1st circumnavigation around the world and AA6DY may be heading to a Jetstream near K9YO.

We’re going to be writing about the Jetstreams in an upcoming post. How they travel, where we find them, and their speed at various altitudes.

Sondehub and HabHub are tracking both our balloons, find our tracking links at Locate and Track

October 17th 2022, 17:14 UTC AA6DY awake. 05:38 K9YO asleep.

We’re tracking our two balloons on 2 WSPR reporting programs. WSPRnet.org gives us our 1st packet and WSPR.rocks, gives us our 2nd packet. On our Locate and Track page we provide the links to APRS, NOAA Hysplit and Ventusky when our balloons get updated. Under each balloon we’re tracking you’ll find the WSPR spot database, this link is automatically updated. For AA6DY I added another NOAA Hysplit model for 84 hours.

As I mentioned yesterday, K9YO is in an area with very few reporters, actually just one today. K9YO woke at 05:38 UTC at Grid NN65VK, Great Gobi “B” Mongolia. We’re tracking K9YO at 12,900 meters, 42,312 feet. The NOAA Hysplit model is showing K9YO moving east.

AA6DY woke at 17:14 UTC at Grid BJ63EJ northeast of Kiribati Island, Oceania. AA6DY is moving in an east, southeast direction but still slow. AA6DY is now reporting at 14,540 meters, 47,691 feet.

Below is where AA6DY reported awake

Below is the October 22nd projected wakeup using NOAA Hysplit for 84 hours. I’ll continue to update this daily.

I’ve added another tracking link to our Locate and Track page for HabHub to follow our balloons and other Pico Balloons that are flying. HabHub will be discontinued next month and Sondehub will be taking over. Our Technical Team is working on getting Sondehub to track our balloons.

August 6th, 2022 14:32 UTC, Asleep Grid LN52HF

We woke up over the Black Sea and now asleep over the Caspian Sea. We are now in our 8th day of flight having flown 7 days, 1 hour and 2 minutes. We’re showing an altitude 32,500 feet with passing storms. We’d like to congratulate Jim Janiak KD9UQB for getting closest to Guessing the Grid Square just 146Km from the target.

Over the Caspian Sea, asleep 9:52am CDT

As we’re moving East, wake-up is coming earlier. Those participating in Guess the Grid Square, please get those in by 6pm. For information on our contest and how to track, please go to Links to Locate and Track

Even if you’re not participating in our contest, please visit our tracking link above to view APRS.fi, Habhub for other balloons around the world and Ventusky to see wind speed and direction from our altitude.

Till this evening, 73, Cary

August 4th 2022, asleep, 16:22 UTC Grid KO45ko, Belarus

WSPR Rocks has KD9TPM over Belarus at Grid KO45ko near Karpeki Belarus. We slowed down a little bit during this leg of our flight. On our 6th day, around 5 days and 2 hours of flight. We’re at 10,240 meters, just over 33,500 feet in altitude. This has been pretty consistent throughout our flight.

The image below is from HabHub, which shows we have some company in our area. KD9TPM is center top on the Belarus/Russian Border.

To follow where we’re headed, links to WSPR.Rocks, HabHub, Ventusky etc. click on the “Links to Locate and Track” tab on our website. Sunrise is around 5:30 am where we’re headed, add about another hour for our solar panels to wake up our tracker. Wake-up will be around Midnight our time.

I’ll take your Grid Square guesses until 9pm this evening. Winner will be announced tomorrow morning. Click on Contact Us or send me an email. 73, Cary KD9ITO
